Frankenau lies in the northern part of the federal state Hessen, at the border
of an area which also is known as the Sauerland.
The village by the name Frankenau was most likely founded in the years
between 500 and 750, as a frontier fortress against the Saxon. It received
its township rights in 1242, from Heinrich Raspe, the count of Thüringen.
Throughout the centuries, Frankenau was an extremely poor area with only
agriculture and farming. Nowadays, Frankenau is located in what is know
n as Germany's primary holiday area.
The holidaypark is at walking distance from the village Frankenau, at the
border of the National Park Kellerwald-Edersee, as was it cut out of the
National Park. The Nationaal Park
Kellerwald-Edersee is located in the
middle of the so called Green Heart of
Germany, has a size of 5724 hectare
and contains approx 50 mountains.
It is not until that this park, south of the
Edersee, became a National Park. Due
to this, the location of our holiday house
can be considered unique.
The nearest town of importance is Frankenberg, a city full of history on amountain near the river the Eder.
From the year 500 on, the Franks maintained a stronghold on the mountain, near a wadable
location in the river, where two important trading routes crossed. A little to the north in
Hessen, the Saxon used to live. Attemps to bring them to the Christianity led to invations
in and from both sides.
It was Karel Martel who built a permanent occupied fortress on the mountain, which however
was abandond again after the subjection of the Saxon. The "Frankenberg" was most likey
completely uninhabited for centuries, untill the Count of Thüringen in 1283 from a pure political
point of view founded a stronghold and a town on the mountain.
Stil in the same century, people started
to build the gothic "Liebfrauen Kriche",
the church which can be seen from
miles around.
Throughout the centuries, there have been several major fires in the town of Frankenberg. The only building which has survived all
of this is the "Steinhaus" at the Pferdemarkt, which was built in 1240 and is nowadays used as a library.
Frankenberg is in de loop der eeuwen
The symbol of the prosperous centuries is the striking Cityhall with its ten towers, which was
built in beginning of the 16th century. On the groundfloor this Cityhall every Saturday morning
still the local market is held.
Another town of importance is located on the opposit side of Frankenau: Bad Wildungen.
Bad Wildungen is one of the most visited health resorts of Germany. The healthy water of
Bad Wildungen has a long history, from the discovery already 1400, followed by scientific
research in 1580.
In 19th and the 20th century, a complete cure district was founded with all kinds of clinics,
chique hotels and a boulevard for young and especially old, poor and especially rich people
to show themselves as being succesfull. Looking out over the city is castle Friedrichstein.
Other well-known places in the area are
Winterberg with in the winter many ski
runs, Korbach with its very old town
centre, Dillenburg with the museum at
the remainders of the castle of the
Dutch king Willem van Oranje, etc.
Besides a lot of historically urban clean,
the northen part of hessen is also known
for its nature. In the first place there is
the already mentioned National park, but
how about the surroundings of a number
of large moors, such as the Edersee,
the Diemelsee, Borkener See and
Singlisersee.
